Record Number of Applicants in 2014

The Kelly Lynn Lutz Scholarship Foundation, an Overland Park-based non-profit that offers scholarships to students who have lost a parent to cancer, is now reviewing its applicants for its 2014 scholarship awards. This year, the KLL Foundation received a record number of applicants, up 30% from last year. Winners will be announced by April 15. The foundation expects to commit another $15,000 over the course of four years to this year’s winners. This is in addition to the $50,000 that has been committed so far to past recipients.

“We have received applications from many inspiring candidates and we look forward to reviewing the applications in greater detail to select this year’s recipients,” said Shane Lutz, President of the KLL Foundation. “While it is always a difficult process to review the stories of these students’ most painful moments, with each passing year, we have been touched by the stories of an even broader and more diverse group of young adults attempting to further their education at the college level.

The theme of Triumph Over Tragedy is always at the forefront of our minds as we are introduced to these young men and women, and there is no better way to accomplish that goal than by helping students of such strong character achieve their dreams even in the face of great loss.”

This year, the KLL Foundation hosted the successful 5K Triumph Over Tragedy run, though its fundraising and awareness did not stop there. The foundation also hosted a wine tasting, honored KLL Foundation supporters at its annual donor dinner, and held a Foundation event with several of Kelly’s college classmates. This year’s 5K 2014 Triumph Over Tragedy run will be held on Sunday, May 4 at the Garmin world headquarters in Olathe, KS.

As a mother, teacher, sister and daughter, Kelly Lynn Lutz positively impacted her community all while valiantly battling cancer. Although she lost that battle in 2008, her work continues through the KLL Foundation, which was founded shortly after her passing. For more information about how to apply, read the scholarships section of our website.
